STEPPER MOTORS

A stepper motor typically has 50 to 100 electrical poles that are activated in steps. A full rotation is then divided into a series of steps – hence the name ‘step’ motor.

This stepwise constant motion means that a stepper motor is often controlled by open-loop, eliminating the cost and complexity of an encoder.

However, stepper motors have limited speed and they run best at 1,200 rpm or lower. The motors therefore generate high torque at zero speed, and thus use less energy at low speed. They are therefore a good solution for projects that require less speed, low acceleration and low accuracy.

We have a wide range of stepper motors from leading international suppliers, available in different variants. We also offer customized solutions to ensure the step motor meets the specific needs of the application.

Kollmorgen stepper motor

Kollmorgen – stepper motors

Kollmorgen’s high-performance, maintenance-free stepper motors deliver very precise and highly cost-effective steering control. These 2-phase stepper motors move in small, very precise, 1.8° steps (200 steps per revolution). It is simple to control and does not require complicated, expensive feedback devices.

With a micro-stepping motor control, each 1.8° step can be divided into even smaller steps. If position control is needed, the motors are available with encoders. Several models are equipped with Kollmorgen’s innovative SIGMAX ® technology for higher torque and acceleration.

Because of their ease of use and simplified control, Kollmorgen stepper motors are good alternatives to pneumatic, hydraulic and servo systems.

Portescap - Linear stepper motors

Portescap – Linear stepper motors

Portescap’s stepper motor linear actuator creates translational motion with the simple operation of a stepper motor, resulting in a cost-effective and reliable motion solution. Achieving linear motion internal to the motor eliminates the cost of designing a transmission for the system, reducing the number of points of potential wear. The overall efficiency is improved by the linear stages as a result of this reduction in external mechanical components. Linear stepper motors also maintain their linear position without power by utilizing the locking torque on the Can Stack motor, reducing the system’s power requirements when not in operation.

The extraordinary capabilities offered by our range of disc-magnet stepper motors are unrivaled by any other type of permanent magnet stepper motor. Their advanced technology, developed by Portescap in Switzerland, allows for truly exceptional dynamic motor performance. The unique thin disc magnet enables finer step resolutions than permanent magnet stepper motors. Significantly higher acceleration due to low inertia and greater top speed than conventional stepper motors due to a shorter magnetic circuit that provides lower iron loss. Therefore, these stepper motors are ideal for applications that require fast incremental motion. This unique design takes full advantage of new rare earth magnets and features:

  • Low moment of inertia resulting in outstanding acceleration and high start and stop frequencies
  • Short magnetic circuit enabling high motor speed and current boosting capabilities
  • Specific magnetization method provides smaller step angles than conventional permanent magnet stepper motors
  • Optimized pack size for incremental movement in the shortest possible time
  • Unique low torque and increased efficiency compared to other stepper motors
  • Highly customizable and available in diameters from 10 mm up to 91 mm
