FREQUENCY CONVERTERS

Frequency converters are mainly used to change the speed of electric motors. This speed change is most commonly used in electric asynchronous motors. The frequency converter controls the frequency and regulates the voltage to save energy and optimize the motor’s power output. A frequency converter can also reduce the starting current so that it does not exceed the rated current indicated on the motor nameplate. Reducing the speed by 20% saves about 50% of the absorbed power. Therefore, frequency converters are a very important device if you need to reduce energy consumption in, for example, a company or in buildings.

Advantages of frequency converters:

  • Soft start/stop allows sizing according to normal operating conditions. This reduces transmission losses (which would otherwise have to be oversized). Reduces wear and tear on motors, gears, and machinery.
  • Enables extended operating range by running motors at higher speeds for shorter periods of time.
  • The frequency converters have a built-in micro-processor. This will, for example give access to: field bus communication, local PID control, inputs from different metering points, electricity meters, and ramp up/down functions.
